I started my private optometry practice in Eureka, Montana in 1984. In the six years that followed, Kootenai Vision Center became a well-established, successful practice, with a substantial patient base. Eureka, located just 5 minutes south of the Canadian border and 89 miles north of Libby, is a great community with a bright economic future. With positive small-town characteristics combined with the fact that people are moving back to rural communities at record pace, a notable optometric business such as this can do nothing but thrive even in turbulent times.

The unforeseen events that took place in the 1990's have given me no other alternative but to relinquish my Eureka practice. In 1990, I was asked to act as a temporary replacement for an optometrist in Libby who developed a terminal illness and was no longer able to commit to the demands of an active optometry business. Overtime, along with the unsuccessful attempts by the family to sell the practice, my temporary position became permanent and the foundation of Kootenai Vision Centers was formed. Soon, this very successful and busy practice in Libby became my main focus resulting in my relocation to the area.

I continue to travel to Eureka one day per week to fulfill the appointments that are scheduled six months in advance. We continue to see all of the patients needing an emergency examination and fit in all of the referrals from the local doctors and schools. However, we regretfully dismiss people on a daily basis that need to be seen for routine comprehensive eye exams, for eye glass fittings, or for contact lenses evaluations. Simply put, Eureka needs a full-time, permanent eye care practitioner who will support the town and continue to provide the care that is essential to the Eureka area.

I firmly believe that Eureka can support a full-time optometrist. The U.S. Census reveals nearly 5,000 people in the Tobacco Valley with median age being 40 years old resulting in the patient base being young and relatively healthy. I would like to see the community have an expert care professional providing their family's eye health needs close to home.

Currently, my office is located in an aesthetically appealing building with Highway 93 frontage. Inside, you will find a well-run practice with one full-time employee in place. This stylish, well-designed office has 2 exam/consulting rooms, a small lab, a modest sized waiting area, a receptionist area, a storage room, a restroom, and an eyewear gallery displaying the latest styles of frames. The office space is rented at a very reasonable rate of $600.00 per month.

If this location is not suitable, relocating the office to another building should not be difficult at this time because of the flourishing real estate market in the Eureka area.
